5 Tips.. To Write More Music

Hey Upstage Family!

This week we will be discovering five small tips that will help you write more music.

Writing music is one of the ways we hone our craft as musicians. Whether you start writing with lyrics or melody, here are a few ideas to try for writing more music.

Tip #1 Writing Prompts

If 2+2=4, then writing prompts will lead you to write more. Writing prompts are exactly what they sound like, they prompt you to write. An example of a songwriting prompt could be as follows:

Write a song about your childhood pet.”

Tip #2 Cover Songs

Start learning more cover songs! Learning different songs will help you both advance in your musicianship skills and inspire your own music. If you are learning more music it will lead you to create more music.

Tip #3 List favorite songs and artists

This tip goes hand in hand with learning cover songs. The songs that we love are the songs we draw inspiration from to write our own music. Creating a list or even playlist of all the music you love will give you another source to draw from when you are stuck.

Tip #4 Word lists

This may sound odd, but create lists of different words. This tip is especially helpful for musicians who are not lyrically driven. If you ever feel you have “run out of words” these lists will be a great backup. The lists could consist of adjectives you like to use, words that rhyme, and even names of places and people.

Tip #5 Journaling

This tip is most useful for musicians who write from personal experiences. If you fit this description you may already find that writing music is essentially journaling. Any act of writing can lead into songwriting. Journaling can also help you track your progress as a musician.

Happy Writing!

In other news,

You've been polled!

We hope you had a great Fourth of July! Here are the results of the poll we asked you earlier this week:
